Yes and no, this is getting confusing. There has been one
published article in JVAD several years ago about some nurses in FL
using a product labeled as a PICC but placing it via the external
jugular. This was only as a last resort when nothing else could be
used. I also think this may have been before the widespread use of
ultrasound. So I really wonder what is the true number of patients
that could benefit from this insertion site. A PICC is longer than
what would be needed for EJ insertion and this site would have oily
skin, making infection a bigger risk, along with all the other
problems with a neck insertion site. Lynn

A PICC placed in the neckĀ well, is not a PICC, but a percutaneous central line that is not peripherally placed. Am I right?

I have heard that some of the PICC Inserters out there are placing PICC's in the EJ. If so would you be willing to share what type of documentation your facility requires for that placement. Is there any competencies required? Do you have to document educational experience for placing PICC's in the neck. Anything you have would be appreciated. Please e-mail me with any info.
Thanks in advance.
