There is an article in the May/Jun 2004 issue of Pediatric Nursing (Vol 30,
Issue 3, page 200) by Cheryl L. McBeth, Ruth J. McDonald, and Margaret B. Hodge
at UC Davis Medical Center titled "Antibiotic Sampling from Central Venous
Catheters versus Peripheral Veins". They drew blood samples for antibiotic
levels from peripheral veins and CVCs on the same patients within 5 minutes of
each other and compared results. According to their discussion, ten paired
specimens were obtained from patients with a PICC and the samples showed no
statistical or clinically significant differences (Ports appeared to be more of
an issue in this regard.) Based on their results they decided to draw from the
line for patients with a PICC, but not for those with other devices. Seems like
a great topic for further research!....

Subject: Drug levels through picc

Does anyone have any literature or references regarding drawing drug
levels through a pediatric picc line. Had a pediatric nurse approach me
stating that their pediatricians will not draw drug levels through the
picc lines as they are concerned that drug will adhere to picc wall and
cause falsely elevated results.
Thank-you
Susan Swierczek RN
