We will clean the site whenever culturing the tip of the line. I try to
encourage the staff to call on of the IV team, all 2 of us, when culturing the
tip. I try to stress that the nurses clean around the site well with an
alcohol pad whenever removing a central line. This way when they do need to
culture the tip they are practicing the same technique.

Subject: Discontinuing a central line?

Question for the group.

Central lines fall out--with our removal using aseptic technique--Bad things do
not happen.

MD' s also remove central lines by just placing a sterile gauze over the site
and pulling.--Bad things do not happen

So is it over kill for nursing to clean the site prior to removal? We do not
do this for peripheral IV.

Naturally a agree with all other aspects such as preventing air embolism and
occlusive dressing until the site has healed.

Thanks, Deb
