Title: SV: Accessing  a PAC thru TSM
Hi Lieve and all,
I’ve checked with 3M and they said it’s OK to disinfect the Tegaderm and access the port through it. Personally I don’t like it, though, as it’s not the same feeling to it, the passage through skin and membrane feels different and I feel one part of checking that accessing was OK is a bit more unsure. Maybe I’m a little silly about this....  I just roll up the TSM so much as to be able to disinfect the skin over the port and access it. After deaccessing I place a new TSM where I rolled up some before.

I know from one hospital in Belgium where the procedure is that the first time after insertion, they always access the port through the sterile TSM.  The first time we’ve heard that we were surprised but it seem they don’t have major problems with this action.  They desinfect the TSM as they desinfect their skin before puncturing the port.

Onderwerp: Accessing a PAC thru TSM

Need help quick!!  Have an attending who is new to our facility who states that when he inserts a new PAC, he places a sterile TSM over site and doesn't want anyone touching his new port.  Is requiring accessing THRU the TSM.  Has anyone out there heard of this practice???  Have a meeting shortly, so would appreciate answers ASAP.
