Title: Re: 5fr Midlines
Everything that is stated by any company representative is considered to be labeling. So yes if someone followed through on these verbal statements relying totally on them and they were not accurate, I suppose there could be a problem for the manufacturer. I truly mean no offense to the many sales reps who read this listserv, but I would never rely exclusively on the verbal information from any company rep. You must see what has been put in writing by the manufacturer because it has gone through the proper legal and regulatory review process. I have seen a legal case where what a manufacturer taught in a PICC insertion class was brought up as evidence. So this applies to educators also. Lynn

I agree, Lynn. Also, if the manufacturer rep stated that this is an acceptable use of the line (trimming to midline for power injection), does that not also create some liability for the manfacturer?

I would not ever alter any catheter in this manner. This would be considered an off-label use plus you have significantly changed the product. If there is a problem that leads to a lawsuit, the manufacturer can not be named because of these changes. It is never a good idea to take a product designed as a PICC and cut it off to be a midline. There will be confusion among the nursing staff due to the labels on the catheter hub and this could lead to some nasty phlebitis and thrombosis problems. Lynn

We have always used single lumen 4fr cathteters for Midline insertions at my facility.
Are there any contraindications to using a 5FR single lumen Midline?
Contemplating using the single lumen 5fr power PICC and cutting for Midline.
Thank you.
