I recently found a copy of the manufacturers directions for the biopatch (since the top side was made blue) and found that they actually recommend allowing the catheter to be positioned along the slit to enhance ease of removal!  That is what I have done for years and have had no problems with it.  I did however have a serious problem when trying to remove the biopatch from a 3 fr groshong placed in a 4 year old.  The catheter was sandwhiched between the TSM dressing and the film of the biopatch and I broke the catheter when trying to remove it!  Of course I repaired it and all was ultimately okay, but after that episode I changed the way I applied the biopatch to always have the cather positioned along the slit.  Artie Hansford

We had the same problem until we started putting the slit of the patch going toward (along) the cath, that way when the patch/drsg is lifted off, the position of the slit allows it to come right off. Does this make sense?

Subject: biopatch question

For those of you out there using this patch: are you having any difficulty keeping the PICC in place when changing the dressing?  We have had some problems with pulling the PICC out a few cms and my nurses are getting very frustrated.   This happens when we have placed the biopatch around the catheter.  In the past we just placed the biopatch on the site, we had no problems and wonderful results…
I hesitate going back to the “old” way but neither do I want to lose my PICCs.  Any suggestions?
