Unfortunately, that is the state of Long Term Care, here in Florida, anyway.  What would fix it?  Better Medicare and Medicaid funding to the faculties, more people having Long Term care insurance and estate donations to facilities.  We often hear of the “rich family of Mr. So and so leaving $1 million to a local hospital for a children’s wing, or cancer center” but we never hear of donations like that to long term care facilities.  This is why so many employ LPNs and CNAs and only 1 or 2 RNs----cost containment.   Perhaps if we lobby our legislature for better funding….but that would increase taxes….and no one really thinks about what will happen to them when they are 80, and therefore do not want to spend more of their working $$ on LTC insurance or higher Medicare premiums.

It also makes one question if we are allowing the financial pressure to lower the standard of care we provide to SNF patients, who are primarily elderly patients. I would hate to think our parents and grandparents cannot expect the same level of care and clinical critical thinking that we expect for ourselves.
