Periodically on this list the issue of immunologists advising against PICCS & 
Ports has come up. In the following new article, you will see that at least in 
terms of IVIG administration, the AAAAI Primary Immunodeficiency Committee 
states that "placement of indwelling catheters or ports for IGIV administration 
is unlikely to be beneficial." This is a Category IV recommendation, from 
expert committee reports or opinions or clinical experience of respected 
authorities.

However, it should be noted that while not as strongly based in evidence as 
many of the other recommendations, this statement is consistent with reported 
and observed behaviors and preferences re avoiding the use of long term 
catheters.
