I have referred to the study cited below several times on this listserve
without citing a reference. I'm moving my office and came upon it, so will
give the reference. This is related to accessing ports with clean technique
vs. sterile. My point has always been that this was conducted in an outpatient
setting in which ports are accessed and deaccessed on the same day, so one
would have to make a giant leap about its applicability to inpatient care where
port needles may stay in as long as 7 days. It's the only study of its kind
that I am aware of.
