Title: Re: Blood draws/Med admin
For many years, I have only used 10 units per mL to lock all central lines when the lumen is being used on a routine basis. The volume should be twice the internal volume of the catheter + add-ons. Usually 2-3 mL is enough for a PICC. I have only used 100 units per mL when the lumen was not being used.

This amount of heparin, either 100 or 10 units per mL can be flushed into the patient without serious concern for affecting the coag factors. Larger concentrations of 1000 to 5000 units per mL are sometimes used for dialysis catheters and this amount should be aspirated. Lynn

#1:  If you are locking your open ended piccs with heparin, are you flushing first and pushing the heparin into the pt. and then drawing your waste or are you just withdrawing waste?

#3:    We currently lock with 2.5 ml of 100u/ml heparin.  Is anyone managing with less?
