Where do you store this tubing between patient visits?

Subject: RE: RE: outpt infusion reusing IV tubing 72hr

We are a small community hospital with a small infusion room. We maintain our
outpatient tubing for 72hrs. We change our saline flush bag q am. As soon as
we infuse our patient we cap the end of the tubing. All our tubings are labeled
with start date and time, change date and time, we label all our bags with date
time and pt. name. When we have more than one patient coming in daily we label
our pumps also. If the end cap has fallen off we always replace all tubing and
new bag. I have not had any known infections and have had patients coming in
for 6 - 8 wks. at a time.
But we are a small unit with a very dedicated staff.

More importantly, I am interested in HOW we could gain such evidence. Do we
expect patients to give informed consent to participate in a study when we tell
them--" this is a study to see if reusing tubing over 72 hours will cause
infections, so we can save $$$ for the hospital, or you can refuse and we will
change your tubing every day, and then we know you will NOT get an infection"

I find it difficult to imagine how we could come up with such evidence. I think
in some cases we need to use common sense, our assessment skills and the
principals of infection control. Sometimes we need to take what we already know
and apply it to more than one situation.
