We switched a couple of years ago. I think it was our Infection Control
department that gave the nod and encouraged the change. Our IV-related
infection rates have always been low, and there hasn't been an increase as a
result of the increase tubing-life. However, tubing often gets changed before
the 96 hours because we encourage new tubing with new IV sites. PIV sites
don't always last 4 full days.

Aloha,

Maria

Last week I tried to post a question on the list serve and it took the
question, but no replies, so I am trying again. Our hospital group is
evaluating changing the peripheral tubings on IV's from 72 to 96 hours. If you
are working in a hospital that currently uses a 96 hour change rate would you
please post any thoughts that you might have on the process, any changes in
infection rates that you may have seen or any studies that you have conducted.
All information thankfully accepted. You may e-mail me directly at [EMAIL
PROTECTED] if you prefer. Thanks, Colette Clark RN, IV Support Sacred Heart
Medical Center.
