We had this question come up recently. I told them that if they want to
infuse through the PICC, then they can only do about 1 liter per hour---that
is the maximum the IV pumps will allow (at least with our pumps)[EMAIL PROTECTED]
mls/hour. It defintely won't go in over 20 minutes like it would if the
patient has an 18 gauge angio in a large vein.

Subject: Fluid bolus administration

I have been ask to find information on administering a fluid challenge
bolus of IV fluids to a hospitalized patient. The question arises do you
use a pump, or take the tubing out of a pump and run it in wide open, or
set the pump to run in at the max rate the pump with deliver, hang a bag
with the amount of fluid ordered for the bolus or use the existing bag???
I looked for guidance in the INS P&P, Infusion Therapy in Clinical
Practice and Core Curriculum of Intravenous Nursing and can not find where
safe administration is addressed.
Thank you for any help and references to best practice.
