Through working with port manufacturers, I know that there are some facilities that have used ports for therapeutic phlebotomy. I don't think that anyone has published on this procedure yet and the port companies will probably not include this as a claim because they don't have the research to support it. But I know it has been done. Lynn

However,it seems to me that a PICC strong enough to stand up to the positive pressure of a CT injection could handle the negative pressure of a vacutainer for the phlebotomy without collapsing the lumen.

Nadine,

This is the only PICC nurse at VMC in San Jose who would like to ask you one
question.  Have you ever placed a PICC or encountered any Port placement
just for phlebotomy in patients with hemochromatosis because patient has
liver disease and has no veins at  bilateral antecubital fossa.  Thanks for
your help.
