Would like to know your facility's policy regarding routne blood sampling through PIVs in the pediatric population.
Currently we still draw blood through PIV in kids.

One doc said to me today: " When I was in so-&-so children hospitals, we put in 18G & 20G ALL THE TIME in small kids, like 10 months old;  and those PIVs draw back very well ... ..."
I said I would never put a 18G in a 10 months old. she said :" but those BIG children hospitals are doing it ALL THE TIME."
I said it is much easier to put in a picc than a 18G PIV for infants. Of course she said I was wrong again.
I said I could not find any references to recommand 18 or 20G piv put in infants for routine blood draws. and she told me THOSE hospitals have been doing it for YEARS.

(You can guess I am getting bit upset with that doc.)
