Greetings from soggy South Dakota.....it's really raining here!
A question......
Just how easy is it to move from placing PICCs in adults to placing them in
PEDs patients? I do mostly all adults.....occasionally a peds patient, but
many of ours go to IR for placement. We have staff in Peds who have trained
on adults and now want to do our little people. I am not skilled in peds
insertions, and think that maybe these staff should be trained by someone
who routinely places lines in kids. I've suggested that they arrange to go
to another facility and follow someone who has this sort of expertise, but
my suggestion has not been given much weight.
What I'm wondering......is there much difference (beyond vessel size)
between placing lines in adults vs peds? Are there anatomical differences
we should be concerned about, especially while using ultrasound for line
placement? Are my concerns valid or am I overly cautious?
Thanks!
