Thank-you to all who replied.  Right now they have discharged him home with the clots still in place.  He is on cumidin.  He can barely make it to the bathroom and back without crying from pain.  The swelling is as bad as it ever was, clear up his hips and lower back down to his very swollen feet.  The belief is that the clots will resolve themselves???   RaKay

We have had two patients recently this same age one male, one female both had large clots in lower extremities.  Our Vascular surgeon took them to OR under MAC and Local, made an incision starting at the ankle. He infused I am thinking Urokinase  for Several hours then went back to OR with Ultrasound and I believe some flouro went up the leg to the point of the next occlusion made a nick placed a large bore cath.same thing until the clot was gone. I want to say they both ended up going back about three times.  I have to say it was quite remarkable watching the perfusion return to the leg as the hours went by.  Those with interventional rad. may have newer and better techniques but this did work very little discomfort to the patient other then laying around for the day.  We never did know why they got the clots in the first place.

Hope this is helpful

Subject: large clot

I have a personal question for the venous specialists out there.  My 24 year old son has a clot in his Right leg from the iliac vein to his ankle and in the L leg from above the knee to the ankle.  We have no idea of the cause—Any ideas??  Also how is the rest of the country treating this problem?  Any help would be appreciated.     RaKay
