Dear Cathy

Our son has had two portable suction pumps.

The first was a  Laerdal.  It lasted us 6 yrs but when we wanted to buy another set ie. exactly the same one, they have changed the design completely. Laerdal is a very good brand but tend to be a bit pricey.

His current portable suction pump is a   DeVilbiss  .  This is very light to carry around, in comparison with the previous one.  It is a little noisier though.  It can be charged up at home and used on battery while you are out (so far we have use it for up to 12 suctions sessions, lasting a few minutes each, before  we have to charge up the battery) or on the mains if you are near to a plug point. It comes in a bag & cost us about S$800 (US$500?).  We have had it for 2 yrs & its still going strong.

Subject: [VENT-L] Portable Suction Machine

What kind of the portable suction machines do you use?  I have the one they gave me when I left rehab in 1989.  It used to work with a special battery or in the cigarette lighter.  The special battery pack is no longer available.

I am a quadriplegic due to a spinal cord injury.  I wanted a machine that I could take out with me.  I am on the vent, 24/7 and use stainless steel Jackson trach.  I do not get suction that often, but I never leave home without the old clunker I have.

If anyone has a portable machine with a good history, I would appreciate your input.

Cathy
