The LP10 is a dependable vent but as you found out it doesn't ventilate you like you were use to.  Have you tried an LTV?  The LTV has extended features that are used to make ventilation more comfortable on your PS spontaneous breathes.  Check with your DME if they carry them.  You should have a permanent manual resuscitator bag for the exact reason you explained.  If your vent fails and you do not have a back up vent then you can be hand ventilated until a vent can be brought to you.  You should have a back up plan for all your equipment if there is a power failure or what not.
