Concerning your questions I could hardly recommend the "Hüttenpalast<http://www.huettenpalast.de/>" in Kreuzberg if you are willing to experience something special in Berlin. Also quite nice is "Lekkerurlaub Notaufnahme" <http://www.lekkerurlaub.de/>, also located in Kreuzberg. As you can see, I am focussing on this area ;)
Unfortunately I don't know any "nice" locations around Alexanderplatz, but with the U-Bahn these locations are only about 10-15 minutes away. I hope you'll have a good first time here.
