I have this same frustration. What I've noticed, though, is that Versions actually doesn't take focus, although Spaces still zooms to the space that holds Versions. This is even worse, in a way, because while I'm looking at Versions, my focus is still TextMate, for example. So I cmd-tab and get lost, zooming between Spaces again.
