hi,

i'm new to svn thanks to versions, which really made a good impression
on me so far.

but i have a conceptual problem that i am trying to get around and i
would kindly ask the more experienced on this list to help me out.

say i'm working on a wordpress-based project. i set up a local working
copy and i checked out the latest wordpress tag (2.8) from the
wordpress repository. i also established an external link to my own
repository for the files i am developing (a theme folder). and i
established external links between the plugin folder and the plugin
repository for third-party plugins that i am using. so far so good. i
can commit changes i made to my local files to my repository, it's all
working fine.

BUT

1) because my top-level folder in the working copy is actually a
checkout from the wordpress repository (where i have no write
privileges), i cannot simply select the whole project and commit -- i
get prompted for user/password and i can't go beyond this. i would
think that versions should have a setting or something that would make
it possible for me to commit only those changes for which i have write
privileges and ignore the rest. is this a reasonable request to make?

2) what will happen when wordpress comes out with a new revision.
right now, if i select 2.7.1, i.e. if i want to downgrade, and i try
to check it out to the same folder where i have my 2.8 installation, i
am warned that the folder already exists and that its contents will be
overwritten. so how can i update a working copy to a new release
whiteout overwriting externals?

these are probably very basic questions, but i hope somebody will be
able to point me in the right direction.

all best,
toma
