Yes, Subversion can ignore such patterns, but you'll need to specify that 
pattern on the global-ignores line of your ~/.subversion/config file. For 
reference, here's mine:

global-ignores = *.o *.lo *.la .*~ *~ ._* .DS_Store .Trash* *.pbxuser *.mode* 
*.perspective*
