I no longer have a designated tying area in the house; Marcie has taken up
two thirds of the basement w/ her basket weaving. My materials are over
what’s left of the basement, including parts of my shop area, the family
room & probably every other room in the house w/ the exception of the
bathrooms. I attempted to grade & sort when I first started tying a few
years ago, but that went right out the window. Congratulations, maybe I’ll
hire someone to attempt that for meJ

”do you suppose all this activity is a result of getting ready for
winter..so-called "settling in"? In my case, it will make

the Christmas tying much easier. Have you found that your tying is lots
easier as well? Let me know. Joyce”

For me ‘settling in for winter’ has got very little to do with it. I don’t
have this tying season that many tyers have, simply because my amount of
fishing doesn’t make summer qualify as ‘fishing season’. This year the
fishing has been a week up north and two days at the local P&T club lake.
Last year was a weekend up north and three P&T trips to the club lake.

The primary factor in what triggered such a, for me, unnormal behaviour as
tidying up without real reason is that the time spent in front of the vise
has decreased. It hasn’t been as much tying for fun as it was before,
without a real ‘purpose’ for the flies (such as need for fishing or swaps
etc). It doesn’t feel right to sit down and meet irritation the first thing
you do so the choice has been tying with a “tying because you have to”
feeling... or doing something else. It’s like having to start with washing
the dishes before start cooking... or going for the easier and available
choice – microwave food, pizza etc. (and saving the mess/dishes “to the next
time”). Many of my tying sessions have also been with the gear carried out
to the kitchen.

“My sister is organizing my tying room for me this past few weeks as well. I
have a lousy sense of organization, so when I can't find things, I go and
get another. Now each color of thread is in a separate keeper and she's half
way done with the flash, furs and feathers,”

I would say that INITIALLY I’m quite organized... and the life in here
SHOULD be easier than it has been. I have an Excel based material database
telling me where it’s located, what category it is, what specific material
it is, what type, what color, what size, what grade/quality, status (soon
out/how many spares), source, wholesaler and manufacturer. If I know that I
have pink rabbit strips, this will tell me if they are crosscuts before I
start looking. If my regular dealer is out of the material I’m looking for,
I will have the wholesaler to contact for other dealers. If I need something
that I don’t have, this will tell me the close things to it and making it
easier to figure out a suitable substitute... etc... etc. Nothing goes into
a drawer/box without getting a row in this sheet. If I’m lazy for the moment
or don’t really know much yet (often auctions), it goes into the “awaiting”
box and a row in the bottom without closer details. Being a shared file on
our local network I can quickly see from another computer in the house...
and also being a file in a private folder on my website domain, I can even
see from a computer somewhere else.

So, INITIALLY I’m quite organized and the ‘thought’ is there. The
‘maintaining’ has been a whole other deal though. Much has been on the
floor, on top of eachother somewhere else... or spread out in the wrong
places. But now I will make an effort to change this and make it “fun to tie
for fun” again.

/Nick
