 What I do is basically the overhand weave. Doing it with a Knitpicker is 
easier when using thread. Trying to weave the thread by hand is hard to handle. 
It was originally done with a Crochet hook but I tried the Knitpicker and found 
it a lot better. I also do scuds, Sowbugs and other bodies using two thread 
colors.

There's been a few comments recently on this. I know Tony 
has a version and Nick does some.
Torril Kolbu is famous for them, and you can find her on 
the internet.
Extended bodies are one aspect of crocheted flies, as is 
Tony's.
 
Weaves can present almost the same effects as crocheting, 
and are quicker to tie.
Look up:
czech weave, 
overhand weave, 
square-knot weave, 
belly-weave.
