Jack,
Try painting the foam with clear vinyl cement.
It'll penetrate and toughen up the foam, yet stay flexible.
I'm thinking of a 'Gummy-Bear' popper for a swap if there is one.

Thanks Dono. I tie a lot of foam poppers. I usually make my own from
flipflop foam. Sometimes the foam is too soft, the fish actually can
tear the foam. I would usually put the earplugs I have experience with
in this category. But the colors on these is soo interesting, it may be
worth the short life of a fly.

Jack,
they are ear plugs. Squish them and stick them in your ears and they
expand to custom-fill your ear channels.

Howe dense (durable) is this foam? What size hook are you using?
thanks

This weekend I tied foam flies at Sportfiskemässan 2010 here in Sweden. A
lady came up to me, looked at my ear-plug hopper in the display and told
me that "At work we have ear-plugs in all kinds of neat colors." Then she
took my card and said that she would send me a few. Today when I came
home from work I saw an envelope on the table... "To fly-tier Niclas
Runarsson".
I was pretty sure that I knew what it was, so I opened it immediately...
thinking "YES!!! Now I can tie ear-plug flies in other colors than
yellow - a green, a red, maybe even a pink." But when I opened the
envelope and took out the bag I felt a chill going straight through my
back. This was some freaky stuff for sure... way beyond the solid colored
ear-plugs I had been expecting:
So, in a couple of days the nice lady will have an envelope in her
mailbox... with a *'Flat-Face MacApakka'*
