Wayne,
Your question needs to be narrowed down a bit. Will you be fishing in creeks,
rivers, or lakes?
East-coast trout take a little bit different fare than Rocky-mountain trout,
but many patterns will overlap.

In 34 years of trout-fishing in the rockies, I have never settled down on a set
number of patterns, as I've had great days and been skunked on other days with
each one. What I do, and it's much easier now with the internet and local shop
web-sites, is contact a local shop for the waters you want to fish, and just
ask them. Tell them what water, the time of year, ask about hatches, species,
and what their guides use (sometimes they won't tell you, or they'll fib).

http://www.wyomingflyfishing.com/northplatteriverfishingreports.aspx is the
fishing page of a local fly shop. They cover about 6 main local waters, and
offer information about flows, hatches, weather, effective flies, etc. They
can also tell you if there are indigenous food like sculpins and mysis shrimp,
or scuds and what colors are working.

Hope this helps. It's why you are a fly tier and not a fly buyer.

        Hi All;

One of my goals for 2011 is to get into flyfishing for trout on a
regular basis.

What would be a good selection of flies to start with for trout fishing?
