Hi guys,

Sorry, those aren't my thumbs in the photos, but Al Beatty's. I had to go pick
up a mag to see how he presented the info. Didn't do a bad job at all, but he
added a few things that aren't needed and left out a few handy things.

He didn't figure out how to get the hackle stem to disappear into the dubbing.

And if you don't use the BIG electrical clip, the mono won't get twisted with
the dubbing or peacock (too much compression). If all you have is a big clip,
lubricate the mono with something slick at the spinning point, like spit or
wax. If you spin the dubbing as tight as it will go, that 1st wrap can break
fibers (especially feathers). He probably encountered this, so he added the
back-off step, which is OK. But with synthetics and furs, that's not required.
On feathers and peacock, I spin until almost tight and then let the wraps get
tighter with each turn.

For dubbing that starts without a bump, I also let off to wrap the first few
turns without humps, then segment as the body tightens & thickens.

I could tell he hasn't worked with a lot of dubbings yet, because a few of his
comments work with some dubbings, but need adjustments for others. I kinda
wish he had done a multi-colored fly and featured the tapering & segmenting
aspects more.

That's OK, as I can/will cover all of those, and about 4 hours more, in DVD 2.

Thanks for posting and the heads-up, all of you. It's nice to see my technique
in print by a recognized master tyer..
