Joyce, Flat flosses and threads and tapered surfaces (fly heads) don't go together, even if whip-finished. Wrapping on a tapered surface leaves one side of the thread tigher than the other side- enabling the slip down the slope, especially if wrapping down the slope. Wrappin up the slope is much better.
How to whip-finish flat threads on tapered heads: Start the whip-finish right at the eye, work back up the slope, stepping up the wraps atop the previous ones (makes for flatter wraps), and then work back down to the eye, maybe 10 wraps total. Then finish the whip at the thread tie-in point. The hook-eye will then be the bottom end of the knot, holding it all in place. Never finish the whip at the top end- that will about guarantee the knot slipping down as the top and bottom whip-knot wraps are cinched together. I rarely see this in tutorials. Even with this, if you take your fingertips and drag the thread wraps forward, you'll eventually pull the knot loose as it slides forward (like fishing it, too). This method is smooth, quick, and it holds easily until you cement. A good penetrating cement is a must, or cement just before you make the knot, and then after. I use vinyl cement in a squeeze-bottle needle-tip applicator, and it's about all I ever use. I thin it 50/50, which penetrates just about anything, but leaves less of a build-up on top of the threads. This is much easier to demo than to explain. Hope it helps, Don ----- Original Message ----- From: Joyce M Westphal To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, November 12, 2011 8:50 AM Subject: [VFB] re: UTC thanks Thanks for the help. I shall relegate it to the floss bin. I was already using a whip finish and even then it came undone without head cement to hold it..and that didn't seem to penetrate well.
