Martin,

That show was fabulous. Are they going to have another?

We spent a week in Paris before we headed through Belgium to the show in
Holland.

Our other guide was Wim Tehaar (I can't remember the spelling). Do you
know him?

He dared me to swallow one of those whole herrings head-first at one of
those stands along the North Sea,

and I did. Gulped like a sea gull. I think I have photos of that event.
I think Rein was egging me on, too.

Is Bas Vershoor still with us?

Thanks,

DonO

    Hi Don,

Doing fine. Have been very busy in our new house, but most of the
work has been done, so I've got more time for fishing and tying than
I had the past 8 months or so. I tied at a show here and there, but
now that I've got my tying stuff organised I'm finally back into the
swing of things. I still owe you a reply to a mail you sent me just
    before things got really hectic!

When I last heard from him Jan was fine, retired, and fishing a lot.
That shrimp is one of his shrimps allright, but the material is a
little too shiny and metallic looking for eelskin. I remember that
Flyfair. The Irish soccer coach who officially opened the show was
Jack Charlton I think. I don't have Jan's email address, maybe Hans
does? Have not seen Rein Simonse after that Flyfair back in 98.

        Martin,

How you been? Been awhile. How is Jan doing? We hit it off great
        at FlyFair in '98.

Below is a photo of the his shrimp with his card.

I musta gave away 20 mice at that show, one being to that famous
Irish soccer coach that was touring the tables with his huge
entourage. Can't remember his name, but he's as big over there
as Vince Lombardi is over here. The mouse ended up in his trophy
showcase (as told by one of his 'bodyguards'). Chandler maybe?

Is this shrimp tied with eel?

Do you know Rein Simonse? He was one of our guides and escorts.

I would like to email Jan if you have an addy for him.

        Thanks,

        Don

            Hi,

Still here! Eel skin is nice stuff. Dutch flytier Jan
Reniers has used it a lot for different patterns, and he has
a page on Hans' Flytier site.

I use it for Muddler type flies, and sub the wing with eel
skin. You cut a canoo shaped wing from the skin, fold it in
half lenghtwise, and split the end along the fold. Next you
tie in the other end and you make the head out of sculpin
wool or deer hair. Like so:

            http://home.planet.nl/~westb001/Eelskinmuddl.html

and mini versions (scroll down on same page) are great
            flies, too.

When they are cured correlty they should not smell too much.
Most of the times they will remain supple, but they should
            not be greasy.

After use, when the fly dries up, the eel skin will curl up
like crazy, but next time you fish the fly the curls will
            disappear when wet.

It's a nice pattern to fish in the dark as well because you
will hear it whizzing by: frrrrrllllll frrrrrrrrrrrllllll.

Come to think of it - I'll send you some, Neville! I cured a
batch just before we moved, to clear the fridge.

            Mart

able to give you some tips. He has tied with Eel Skin.

That's for sure. I learned a lot from you and many of
the other I've met over the years. Along with all those
fly swaps on VFB, FF@ and various web sites I've hung
out on. I still trying to figure out what to do with the
eel skin I picked up last January. A minnow pattern made
totally out of the skin. I wonder if it gives off a
                scent when rehydrated?

                Jerry,

You livened my memory, it was Seven Springs PA. That was
the first time we met. I still remember that grin when
                you introduced yourself to me.

The show moved to Seacaucus N.J. then to Somerset. Those
were some good times. Lot of water under the bridge
                since then.

I drove out to the show when it was held at 7 Springs to
meet you and Hans W. I think it moved to Bayonne the
following year or the next one and then finally settled
in Somerset. Wayne, I'll see you Saturday. I'm looking
for my club name tag so I know who I am.

I'll be there Saturday. I'll be tying at some point,
probably during the afternoon, at the South Jersey
Coastal Fly Anglers table. Stop by. It's always good to
                place faces to names.
