Maybe someone who was in the last hook swap can tell us what the quality of the
Hangensfish hooks were like???

Not only 'where' is important, but 'how' and of 'what' steel? There are wire
hooks and forged hooks, and the stock , metalurgy, and batching processes need
to be controlled and consistent.

What is the QC program? We know the Chinese lack in this regard. How well
controlled is the wire selection and manufactiring processes?

A Chinese-made hook with German steel and controlled Japanese processes might
be a good hook, regardless of make nowadays.

There are the different properties of the hook, also- the point, the barb, the
shape, eye, finish, etc. I've gotten a lot of name-brand hooks with crushed or
un-bent eyes and mal-formed points or barbs. I got an untempered Mustad hook
one time that I twisted and absurd amount and it never broke.

I've gotten bronzed hooks that rust, too. How good is the plating on the
saltwater hooks, and the quality of the stainless steel hooks for big-game
flies?

I am curious as to where various hooks are manufactured now? Any hook
experts out there?

Tiemco- Still Japan? Ties with Umpqua Feather Merchants.
Mustad- All operations now in China
  Daiichi- Still Japan?
  DaiRiki- Japan? Korea?
  Partridge- England, but now?
  Eagle Claw- USA?

  Hi Rick:

I'm not sure how this works without knowing the choice of other participants
otherwise there is the possibility of duplication of popular style and size.
Does each participant receive 1000 hooks? Are the hooks genuine Dai-riki (not
to be confused with Daiichi) or a chinese knock-off? The hook number system
appears similar to Dai-Riki's. I looked at the hopper style but they are $70.44
per 1000.

When Dai-Riki first came out (Dan Baileys) they were made in Japan, then
later in Korea, now ????

Mustad hooks are now made in China and Mustad have been hemorrhaging big $
and have just been taken over by another Norwegian company or financial group.

Although I still use certain Mustad and Partridge hooks (made in the same
Chinese Mustad owned chinese factory) I must admit that I don't have the same
confidence that I have with a japanese hook. Maybe it is because the Japanese
made such good swords and their steel is excellent.

Choose a hook style from the hooks at Hagensfish.com. Dai-Riki I think.
Hooks are from $55 to $65/thousand.
Add 10% for excise tax and $5.00 for postage. I will divinded the hooks up
by weight on a scale at the chemistry deparmten tof the local University. You
will get equal numbers of hooks in several sytles and sizes.
