I recently lost 2 more jars of Dave's Flexament, due to age and
hardening. There was a discussion here recently that went into detail
about which solvents worked with various cements, and which didn't.
Unfortunately, I already deleted all those messages from my inbox.

A couple of nights ago, we were down in La Plata, and I stopped in the
True-Value. They didn't have Tolulene, so I bought a quart of Xylol.
The next morning, I transferred a working amount from the quart can to
a 4 oz bottle with an eye-dropper cap. Then I mixed about 1/2 oz of
Shoe Goo (red tube) with approx. 1 oz of the Xylol, and mixed
thoroughly. After tweaking a bit, I now have a generous amount of
'Shoe Goo Cement', about the consistency of Flex-a-ment. However, it
is not clear, as I had expected; rather, it has a 'milky' color. I'm
afraid to use it until I know for sure that it will dry crystal
clear. Has anyone who has ever tried this had any problems not drying
clear??

I also filled the bottle of fairly new, but dried up Flex-a-ment with
Xylol, and by the next morning, it was good as new. I haven't used
any of it yet, but it sure looks just like new. So, the goo9d news is
that I can (hopefully!) reclaim some of my investment in 3 bottles of
flex-a-ment. Yippee!

Now the bad news; the smell. I had read all the warnings about using
only in a well ventilated area. So to the kitchen I went. I opened
the windows, turned on the stove exhaust fan, and pointed a box fan
into the kitchen. then began mixing the Xylol with the two
concentrated cements. When finished, I wiped the sink, where a little
bit dripped from the can when pouring into the bottle, with paper
towels, Then placed the towels in the kitchen trash, which has a foot-
pedal opening top to it. Several hours later, when my wife got home
from school, she asked me to open all of the windows of the house -
the odor was that bad! So the next question is - how many brain cells
did I extinguish with this little escapade? I was totally oblivious
to the smell in the house, and breathed it in for 4-1/2 to 5 hours.

I suspect that my mistake was in NOT disposing of the paper towels
properly OUTSIDE . . .

That's my story and I'm . . . Y'all have a nice weekend. Wayne: see
ya at 0900.

p.s., Great Feathers [ http://greatfeathers.com/fly-tying-fishing-feathers.aspx
] has snipe in stock as of yesterday.
