Tony, Any particular shade/hue of pink? I know Chuck has found that one pink works best for his Pink Panfish Producer. And a local favorite here in western Wisconsin is John Bethke's Pink Squirrel, that will catch fish if tied with any pink chenille, but works the best with fluorescent shell pink. George, I have caught many fish on the Chironomid by fishing it just below the surface. Aside from using a bobber, I also dislike fishing on the bottom. I know that is where the fish are most of the time but it is not my thing. I would rather enjoy fishing the way that suits me and not catch as many fish than fish the way I would rather not fish. We all have our likes and dislikes, my likes when it comes to flyfishing is the film surface. I hear you might be coming to the Sowbug next year, hope you make it and we can meet one another. I mentioned Dean in my reply to Nev, Dean's favorite midge is also the Zebra Midge. Another real good fish catcher he ties is a Pink midge. Tony. I use a modified Czech / European nymphing technique. The Zebra midge is my "GO TO" fly. I have a fishing partner that is a wiz at it. I don't know if you met him when you was here, his name is Dean. He can catch 10 trout to my one even though I use his flies. I just am not comfortable fishing a strike indicator (Bobber) Tony From: Neville Gosling <nev.gosl...@shaw.ca> To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2012 7:36 PM Subject: [VFB] Mark Martin Midge Hi Chuck: I'm sure it would work. Chironomid fishing is quite an art and can be extremely frustrating. There are many times when I have caught nothing and other times when the fish obliged. I don't claim to be very good at it. I am going to a lake that I have never fished or even seen before, but it has a reputation for good chironomid fishing in the early part of the season. The water is very clear and the drop-off from the shoals can be steep and very deep. A 50 foot anchor line is considered to be too short. Normally, the fish are in the shallower water after ice out however we are talking using a floating line and 20 - 25 foot leaders. Some people use self releasing strike indicators, but this does not appeal to me. When the fish are deep, some people just use a sinking line and cast out a measured amount so that the chironomid fly is a foot to 18 inches off the bottom and just leave it there, moving it occasionally. This can be in 40 feet of water. Apparently, takes can be so violent that rods have been pulled overboard. For me, the biggest problem is finding the fish and the second biggest problem is finding the fly they will take. This is why I am going down in size.
