Usually, the cane blank is unfinished. Flex coat will work, but I would not use 
it for a bamboo rod because once applied is is usually there for good and hard 
to remove if a guide needs replacement. In addition, the cane itself needs to 
be protected and this is normally done with several coats of spar varnish. Only 
impregnated cane does not require protection with varnish.  I would use spar 
varnish for both the thread wraps and the cane itself. I use a product called 
Helmsman by Minwax but there is a brand with a name like "Man of War" varnish.
