Peggy, as you already know, a lumbar fusion is a wonderful way to keep you pain free..eventually. However, it is so vital that you let the bone and plates heal before putting any stress on them. Standard of care is no lifting, heavy work or even walking on uneven ground before 6 weeks and remember, 6 months is the average healing time for any wound. My comrade in arms had his 2 months ago, plate and screws at 3 levels, and was back to work, no lifting, just doing anesthesia, in 2 weeks. It's been 4 months now and he went on a wild boar hunt, riding a 4 wheeler and got his boar, didn't do any lifting or dragging it though. A lot depends on your surgeon, and for sure I'd follow every bit of his advice. Joyce
