As soon as we got to our daughter's house he started talking about "going fishing with Grandpa". I don't know why me since Grandma is the one who gave him his Sponge Bob rod and reel. Maybe it's in the genes. There is a nice little pond just a short walk from his house. We walked along the railroad. picked and ate some wild raspberries and some mullberries too. Ryan's face was pretty purple by the time we reached the pond. His daddy had rigged his rod with a small round red and white bobber and a lime green twister tail. Before leaving home, I had tied some McGill's Bluegill Magic flies. I tied one to the twister tail hook with about 20 inches of tippet. Not exactly fly fishing, but he was fishing with a fly. His dad helped him cast out about 10 feet. Within two seconds his bobber went down and with dad's help Ryan reeled in his first fish. It was a Smallmouth bass about eight inches long. Two more casts netted two Bluegills. Sad to say we had left some essential equipment at home. No cameras, not even a cell phone. But on the positive side, this will allow his first fish to grow in size over the years. After all he does have the genes.
