Jack: I totally agree with you about the little bit of red attracting fish. I
think that they think it looks like the gills on a small fish or minnow, and I
try to use red as the neck thread in as many patterns as I can, and side by
side, the ones tied with that red (gills) catches more fish. At least for me it
does. Chuck

Subject: Re: [VFB] Black blue bead redneck bugger

Hi Bob

Here is the basic recipe for the

Black Blue Bead Redneck Bugger

Hook - #4-12 Streamer Hook, I use Mustad 9674 (I think)
Thread - Red 140 denier Ultra thread
Tail - Black Marabou
Rib - Gold wire (sometimes for variety I'll use a red or other color wire
Body - black chenille
Hackle - black wooly bugger hackle

The only thing a little bit different in the tying is a tip I learned from Al
Fish a few years ago. Tie the hackle feather in by the butt at the front of the
fly, just behind the bead and hackle to the tail. Then catch the hackle with
the wire to secure the end. Wind the wire back to the front with a back and
forth action to avoid catching the hackle and secure the wire at the front
behind the bead with the thread. Make a small collar with the red thread and
whip finish. I feel that a little red is attractive to the fish.

I have been tying mostly #8s lately as a crossover pattern for panfish and
bass, but have caught crappies and even a catfish on this fly. Also a good
dropper fly for a hopper/dropper rig.

Tight lines,
Jack
