Back from 7 days in the Keys, and had a great time. Weather did not co-operate though, and it was windy and cool with overcast skies mostly, so the water temp. never got up to even 70°F.
Spent a couple of days on a flats boat casting platform, and my shoulder and back dust protesteth much. Trying to long-distance cast in high winds with a great degree of accuracy is almost impossible with moving fish that are not moving in a straight line and are also and boat and rod-shy, and all from a raised platform 18” across. But I did catch some snappers when I was casting to some baby tarpon under the mangroves. I cast at a lot of big barracudas and some good-sized sharks, and a monster 7’ tarpon, but nothing was in the feeding mood due to the cold water. Even the turtles we passed were shut down. The bigger blue-water boats checking in at the dock were not coming in with anything special, citing the weather, wind, and swells as the reasons. So I decided not to try that with a fly rod. But it was relaxing and a needed respite from work. I really like the Keys and may retire there. DonO -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group.
