Joyce: Thanks a lot. So it’s like my external TENS unit, in that the pain
relief is only where I place the leads and a small area around that. only it’s
internal. I woke up again this morning with my right foot numb, and thumb and
TWO fingers instead of one finger and one thumb, only this time it’s my left
hand, instead of my right hand. This would indicate to me that the pinching of
the nerves is coming from my upper back, and not my lower since my fingers are
going numb when this happens instead of just my leg and sciatic nerve area
right??

Also how do they pinpoint the pain area in a person like myself in which at
rest, I am NOT in pain, but the minute I start to bend, lift, twist, or
otherwise put my spine in motion does the pain come?? I mean, laying in the ol’
lazy boy, or in bed I’m usually fine, but the minute I get up and try to do
anything. Especially if it’s something as simple as checking the oil in my car
where I’m not bent at a 90 degree angle, but slightly bent over it shoots pain
from both my lower lumbar area as well as my thoracic area. Will the pain doc
then have me do some movements to see where the pain is centralized???

Then again, lying down all depends on where I’m lying. On that MRI as well as
X-Ray table which is hard as a rock and my spine straight as a board yesterday,
It started hurting sooo bad, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to finish
the tests or not. Those hard tables are a far cry from our 8” memory foam
mattress here at home LOL..They were like laying on huge, flat ROCKS...

Anyway, folks, I’m sorry for all this off topic stuff here about my back, but
the only reason I have kept it ON list is because I KNOW there are others here
who are going through, or have gone through, similar situations. I’ll start
putting “OFF TOPIC” in the subject line and so that way, you can just hit the
ol’s delete button and not be bothered, or, If I’m boring ppl with this, tell a
moderator and I’ll take if OFF LIST totally. I said I’d do that if somebody
wanted to tell me about their particular situation in particular, but since
Joyce and I are talking about it in a way that can/could help others I thought
it WAS actually ON TOPIC as I know back problems CAN affect fly casting,
sitting at a tying table for lengths of time etc.

Also, Thanks to all for the help thus far, as I’m worried about this even if
it’s not full blown back surgery, as they do have to make a small incision to
insert the internal spinal stimulator I’ll cal it, as anytime you get cut,
there is a rick of infection. There is a risk even by just getting an infection
from a spinal epidural or even, say, a diabetic shot as any hole/cut can allow
bacterial into the broken skin, thus getting staph (sp) infection etc. Chances
are VERY slim, but the chnce it there nonetheless. Thanks for being patient
with the patient LOL.. Chuck

Chuck, I have seen both good and bad results from these units. Usually, the
first thing pain management people do is inject some local anesthetic in the
area that they feel is causing the problem with your pain. If this local works,
then they find that a tens unit in this area will usually work well. The most
important thing is to identify, precisely, where the pain is being generated in
your spine. If this is done, these work well. The implanted device can only
provide relief if it is in the area from which the pain is arising. Sometimes,
it is found, that just injecting local in the area can quiet the pain and in
this case, local with steroid injection, will be all that is needed and the
tens unit won't be inserted. You have great doctors, especially that you have
both the neurologist and the orthopedic man and the pain management doctor
working together. This is the best of all worlds. Kindly keep us informed.

Joyce: Thanks a lot. I take it you know about these type spinal cord
stimulators?? If so, do most ppl get relief from them??? I have used an
external TENS unit for yrs, or tried to, but I get allergic to the gel sticky
adhesive, or start to sweat and they fall off, get caught in clothing and get
ripped loose etc. I think an implanted one would be much better, as the
external one DOES help me when I can use it for short period of time. Chuck

I am delighted with your success today, and while it doesn't take care of the
pain immediately, I feel you are really on the right track in doing what will
most benefit you. You have found great specialists and, imho, ones that are
doing exactly what is needed to best care for you. Kindly keep us in the loop.
I continue in prayer that you will find the exactly right therapy/pain
management for you. Joyce
