I have been using a double Davey knot for years (just two quick Davey knots in
a row) to tie my flies to tippet, and have been trying to find a loop knot that
incorporated a Davey's to use when I wanted the fly to move freely. I finally
figured out a very simple method (for those of you who already know the Davey
knot): first tie an overhand knot in your tippet, run the tag end through the
eye and back into the overhand knot and pull tight to the eye, making sure you
leave a long enough tag for a Davey knot. Then tie a Davey knot around the
standing line. Now for the most important part. Hold onto the tag, but tighten
by pulling on the standing line. Like magic your loop will appear! For those
of you who tie a Homer Rhode loop this will sound very familiar. This is
nothing more than a Homer's loop with a Davey knot replacing the second part of
the knot. No reason to relearn if you already have a good loop knot, but if
your using a Davey knot and want to occasionally have the fly on a loop, this
works very well.
