"A recent study in 'Fisheries' magazine reports on various studies of
ibuprofen( a popular over the counter inflammatory drug). Seventy to 80
percent of this drug is not used by our bodies and excreted. It has been
detected in surface waters as well as in various fish tissues. Fish exposed to
ibuprofen in the lab can have abnormal spine and bone growth. A study a the
University of North Carolina- Wilmington showed that concentrations similar to
those found in wastewater effluent, expression of genes associated with bone
and skeletal development was reduced, as was expression of gene regulation
immune function and metabolism."
