I have used them in the ponds around here. Most on 60 degree hooks with
slotted beads. I like them as I don't get hung up as much.

replies. Yes, I did mean "balanced" rather than
suspended. There is some popularity for that pattern here in
Oregon and northern California.

to hear that there is really no difference in effectiveness
of the hooks (using different extension angles) when you
suspending the pattern below and indicator.
Here's a sample of a
balanced version of one of my flies Bastardo Bugger as tied
by a friend.
I
think what I need to do to improve hooking qualities are to
move the angled hookeye as far forward as possible, use at
least a tungsten bead, and also to use a wider gape hook,
like Neville suggested.
These balanced patterns are
definitely not my favorite way to tie, but they do merit a
place in the flybox. At least *until further
notice*.
