Hi John
I think you may have been also thinking of another lister who specializes in porcupine quill bodies. I'm thinking of Rob McLean ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) . Rob dyes his porcupine quills and sells them through his company, Freestone Flies out of Rawlins, Wyoming.
I've used the quills for Brachycentrus Caddis larvae pattern that Ken Iwamasa developed and ,I think, he contributed to one of Byard's earlier fly swaps. You can see my contribution in Warren Albert's Cabin Fever Swap at : http://www.geocities.com/tutorial22000/cabincaddisswap.html?977115930700
The quills do get a little dry and brittle. I haven't tried any hair softener but that may help.
