Bart,

For me it just a personal choice.  I consider flytying and flyfishing more
of an art than a sport.

What the trout sees would depend on the angle it approaches the fly from and
sometimes that can be more than a foot print.

Reason number 3 would be, it makes it a lot easier for me to see the dry
with the wings on.
