I vacuum seal..there is enough air in there that the hackles are really not
hurt at all. If you want, when you get them and take out the fly, just hold
it over a steaming cup of tea for a minute and they'll be as good as new.
Must admit that few of my flies as I fish them stay pristine so I don't
worry much about hackle crushing. Good quality hackle seems always to bounce
back from the insults to it..even in the fish. My favorite fly was retired
after 28 hits and though the hackle a little beat up, still very fishable.
