I spent a lot of time researching the 8 weights last year, and settled on a 2 piece St. Croix 8'9" Ultra. I wanted the 9', but settled on the 8'9" because I got it for a song (it was a demo) at 1/2 price. I balanced mine with a Tioga reel. My fishing buddy like it so much he got the 9' Ultra, but balanced his with a Hardy reel (he's single, and had more cash to spend!). In terms of pricing, the St. Croix isn't cheap ($300), but I liked it better than comparable Sage and Orvis rods.
