I went through the same dilemma and found a book called "Matching the Hatch" by Ernest Schwiebert, Jr.  While published in the 1950s, the
information covering this subject really has not changed.  Hope that helps.

I'm curious about some old flies that i have. They were bought at a garage
sale 15 years ago in a shadow box. There are midges, coachmen,
salmon/steelhead. Some of which are tied with polar bear. My question is how
does one find a value on this shadow box of flies? I've checked with the
local fly experts in my area(central wyoming) and jackson, wyoming. No one
can give an aprox. value.

tight lines,
