My little girl started tying at age 5 and at age 9 still loves to tie. She started with woolly buggers and streamers and this week she will start doing some simple dry flies. Like it was said let them have the big hooks and all the gaudy colored stuff they want and try not to correct them much at first just enough so it will not fall apart.
And most of all take them with you to a delayed harvest stream and let them use the new flies on a bunch of the stockers.
