Gary, no I don't add anything to the front in the fashion of Jack
Gartside. Jack's flies were intended to be more or less imitative and so
a speckled hackle in front might be of some value. My favourites, the
Canary (pink, orange, yellow) and a blue/black pattern are strictly
"attractors." They don't do much for summer-run salmon, but are top fall
producers; usually fished deep. I have tried both tip and "butt" methods
and prefer the latter. Hans' dubbing loop would likely work, but it's
more effort. We lose alot of these flies so tying speed is desirable.
Also, I now tie all mine on tubes. Cheers,
