Bill,
Try wrapping your hackles a little sparser. The body can be shorter and thinner.

The head can be a lot smaller. To do this, tie the hackle by the tip with the
dull side up before you start the body.( got this from Hans) Wrap the body and
advance the thread to the hook eye.
Fold the barbs back and make one to one and a half turns and tie off.
This eliminates the tie in bump for the hackle. You come out with a nice clean
small head.
Hans does it a little different. I will leave that to him to describe.
